Step 1: Choose the File + Serve + File Option
When filing a new case in One Legal, you can choose to include the service of process at the same time.
- You’ll make this selection at the beginning of the filing workflow.
- This combines filing, serving, and filing the proof of service into one streamlined process.
- It’s a major time saver and simplifies starting a new case.

Step 2: Provide Service Details
After selecting the combined option, you’ll be prompted to enter information for service of process, including:
- Name of the party to be served. Note that you can select from previously entered parties.
- Entity type (individual, business, government agency, etc.)
- Service address
- Preferred service level (Standard, Rush, Registered Agent, etc.)

Step 3: Service Begins Only After Court Acceptance
One Legal never serves unfiled documents.
- Your service order remains in pending status until the court accepts the filing.
- Once the court returns conformed copies (approved documents), the service order moves forward.
- If the filing is rejected, the service order is automatically canceled.
Step 4: Internal Review Before Dispatch
In most cases, the court’s returned document packet includes everything needed for service.
However, some courts (particularly those using the eFileCA system, such as San Diego, Fresno, and Merced) do not.
- After acceptance, One Legal automatically creates the service order but pauses for internal review.
- Our team confirms all documents required for service are included.
- If anything is missing, we’ll add it or contact you to provide it before dispatch.
Step 5: Optional Review Step (Recommended for eFileCA Courts)
You can choose to review your service order yourself before it’s sent out.
- When enabled, you’ll receive an email notification when the service order is ready to review.
- You can open the order in draft form, make edits, and add or remove documents as needed.
- This option is highly recommended when filing in courts that don’t return all serve-ready documents.
Step 6: Filing the Proof of Service
If you selected the option for One Legal to file the proof of service:
- We will file it automatically after service has been completed successfully.
- The filing uses your own court filing credentials, so it appears in your account and you receive all court updates.
- If service is unsuccessful, a non-service affidavit is generated but not filed.
Why Use File + Serve + File?
- Streamlines your workflow—no need to return later to order service
- Ensures immediate follow-up once the court accepts your case
- Saves time, reduces manual steps, and keeps everything in one order
