How to Edit a Matter Number

Managing Matter Numbers on your orders

Overview

Matter numbers link your orders to the right billing code in your firm’s system. If a matter number is wrong or needs to change, you can update it directly from the Order Details page. No support ticket required. 

How to Edit a Matter Number

Step 1: Select the Orders tab from the One Legal Dashboard

Find the order you want to update and click on the order number.

Step 2: Click the edit icon

Look at the Case Information sidebar on the right side of the page. You’ll see the Matter / Billing Code field. Click the pencil icon directly to the right of it.

Step 3: Search for or create a matter

A modal will open with a search field. Type to search your existing matters. Select the right one from the dropdown. If the matter doesn’t exist yet, you can create it directly from this modal.

Step 4: Save the change

Once you select or create a matter, save your changes. A toast notification will appear at the top of the screen confirming the update is in progress.

Step 5: Wait for the sync to finish

This usually takes a few seconds but can take up to a couple of minutes. You don’t need to stay on the page while it finishes. Come back and refresh to confirm the change. 

What Changes When You Update a Matter

All related orders tied to the order that you are modifying will be updated at the same time. You don’t have to update each line item separately. One save covers the entire order.

About the “Updating matter number” Message

After you save, you’ll see a message that says “Updating matter number, check back later.” This is expected. It means the process started, not that something went wrong.

You can keep working in the meantime. When you come back and refresh the page, the updated matter number will be there. 

FAQ

Can I create a new matter?

Yes. If the matter you need doesn’t exist in the system yet, you can add it from inside the modal. You don’t have to navigate to the Matters page first.

Can I update matter numbers for multiple orders at once?

Not yet. This page handles one order at a time. Bulk editing is planned for a future release and will be available from the Matters page.

The “updating matter number” message is gone but the matter number still looks wrong. What should I do?

Wait 2 to 3 minutes, then refresh the page. If the number still hasn’t changed, try the update again. If it keeps failing, contact support.

Do I need to stay on the page while it updates?

No. The update runs in the background. You can navigate away and come back later to confirm.

Where exactly is the edit icon?

On the Order Details page, look at the Case Information sidebar on the right. Find the Matter / Billing Code row. The edit icon is directly to the right of the matter number.
