Mandatory eFiling
Who must eFile: All attorneys in all case types. Self-represented parties are encouraged but not required to eFile.

Exceptions to Mandatory eFiling
In addition to statewide exceptions under CRC 2.253, Butte County requires paper filing for:
- Financial institution documents, care facility documents or escrow documents as defined under Probate Code § 2620, submitted by conservators, guardians, or trustees of court-supervised trusts
- Documents with attachments/exhibits that cannot be accurately transmitted via electronic filing due to size or type
- Documents typically submitted during the course of a proceeding (e.g., Trial Exhibits)
- Documents lodged with the court provisionally under seal

Motion in Limine Filing Deadline
Authority: Local Rule 1.2
- All motions in limine must be filed five (5) Court days prior to the Trial Readiness Conference
- The judge may allow filings after this date for good cause
Trial Readiness Conference Requirements
Authority: Local Rule 1.9
For all jury trials, Butte County requires:
- A Trial Readiness Conference Statement (form GR.020) must be filed at least five (5) Court days prior to the TRC
- A copy must be provided to opposing counsel
- Form GR.020 is available on the Court's website at www.butte.courts.ca.gov
Tentative Rulings
Authority: Local Rule 2.9, Tentative Rulings Page
- Tentative rulings on law and motion matters are available on the Court's website at www.butte.courts.ca.gov by 3:00 p.m. on the Court day preceding the hearing
- With the exception of minor's compromise petitions and quiet title matters, oral argument generally is not required on law and motion matters
- If you wish to have oral argument, you must notify the court and opposing counsel by 4:00 p.m. one business day prior to the hearing
- Absent oral argument, the tentative rulings will be adopted as final at the time set for hearing
Continuances of Law and Motion Matters
Authority: Local Rule 2.8
- Requests to continue law and motion matters may be made by filing a Stipulation and Order to Continue by the close of business the third Court day before the hearing date
- Such continuances will only be granted where there is an agreement between the parties and authorization by the moving party
- Any request not accompanied by the appropriate fee will be rejected
- After the close of business the third Court day before the hearing date, no matter will be continued (whether by stipulation or otherwise) without written Order of the Court, and for good cause shown
Ex Parte Applications
Authority: Local Rule 2.10
- Ex parte matters are considered at:
- 4:00 p.m. on Monday-Thursday
- 1:30 p.m. on Fridays
- Any day before a holiday wherein the Court is closed
- Notice must be provided to opposing parties by 10:00 a.m. the day before the requested hearing date
- All papers must be filed with the Court by 10:00 a.m. on the day of the hearing
- An ex parte declaration shall contain the information as set forth in Declaration Re: Notice of Ex Parte Application for Orders and/or Orders Shortening Time (form LM.010)
Late Papers
Authority: Local Rule 3.11
- No paper shall be rejected for filing on the ground that it was submitted for filing after the time set forth in local rules
- Late filed papers shall be filed by the Clerk and shall be marked conspicuously as "Late Filed Document"
- The Court may, in its discretion, refuse to consider late filed papers or may impose sanctions, including monetary sanctions
- Where opposition papers are late or entirely omitted, no oral argument by the opposing party will be allowed unless the Court otherwise directs

Cover Sheets and Addendums
No local cover sheet or addendum requirements beyond statewide Judicial Council forms found in Butte County Local Rules.

Multimedia and Non-Documentary Exhibits
Butte County has specific local requirements for multimedia and non-documentary exhibits:
- Multimedia (e.g., Flash Drives, DVDs, etc.) and other non-documentary items, whether labeled or presented as Exhibits or Attachments, will not be accepted by the Court as part of any filed pleading, motion, or document
- All pleadings, motions or petitions, or any paper filed with the Court, must be presented solely in paper (or electronic paper) format and in conformance with CRC 2.100 et seq.
- Any Exhibits or Attachments other than paper must be incorporated by reference in the paper (or electronic paper) document
Non-Documentary Exhibits Procedure:
Non-documentary Exhibits or Attachments may be accepted by the Clerk's Office only after:
- Receiving prior authorization from a judicial officer
- Items must be pre-marked and attached to a coversheet describing:
- The Exhibit or Attachment
- The case name and number
- The pleading or motion to which the item is related
- The pending hearing date and time
- Contents of the Exhibit or Attachment
- Such items shall be marked "Received" by the Clerk's Office and stored in accordance with standard Exhibit processing procedures for trial exhibits
