What does 'ad damnum' or 'demand amount' mean?

When you select certain document types (including, most commonly, a breach of contract) in your eFiling service provider, an extra field will appear to ask for the value of the relief you are demanding, so the court can determine what fees to impose. Leaving this field blank or specifying an incorrect amount can result in a rejected filing.

One Legal simply labels this field “Demand Amount.” Other EFSPs may use alternate language like the Latin term used in the Clerk’s office (“ad damnum”) or “amount in controversy.”
